Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
