The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
