Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

His attorney filed the plea on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple causes including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Trump urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they aimed to present various motions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a government attorney who the previous administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as national leader. At the period, he was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

The federal government assert James Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by saying he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording the former director posted to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and alleged the former president of acting like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump shared on online platforms demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and others.
