Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped after the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area displayed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the property was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
